Back in the summer of '06... oh yeah!

We had just experienced the greatest summer of our lives... the World Cup in Germany, endless 'socializing' with friends, trips to the Caribbean and Europe!

Then came the phone call... ring, ring... "Hey babe, how's work?"... "Same old, same old, how bout you?"... "Well, I have not been feeling that well for a few days and decided to take a pregnancy test!"... "Oh [long, dramatic pause], and?"... "it says I'm pregnant!".

In the blink of an eye, 'selfish and carefree' instinctively turned to 'responsible and motivated'.

At 38 years old, I had actually reached the stage in my life where I did not think I would have kids. I experienced the full gammut of emotions... nervous, scared, apprehensive, interested, happy, happier, ecstatic!

When the excitement took hold it felt like Christmas as a child... waiting for Santa Claus... our due date just seemed so far away! The clock stood still! Fourty-one weeks felt like three years as we anxiously went to each baby appointment, purchased every unnecessary (yet cute and matching) baby accessory in the stores, attended birth classes, finished the baby room, bantered over names...

Then, a day before 7-7-7, after a long labour... a miracle happened. I snapped the pictures and video, carefully watched the nurses and doctors to make sure the baby was in good health, then followed the nurse to measure and weigh our bundle of joy. 22 inches, 9 pounds 1 ounce... then the nurse turned to me and said, "Here you go, he's your son... you have to hold him sometime!". Tears flowed from my eyes as my arms and legs shook, and I held him for the first time. It was love at first site... my life had changed forever!

Three and a half years later, our son is smart, sensitive, healthy, spirited, and fun! We completed our million dollar family when my wife gave birth to our gorgeous daughter seven months ago. The two of them are best friends and seem to have their own secret code. She completely rules the roost!

I cannot imagine life without our children. You really don't know what you are missing in your life until you are fortunate enough to be blessed with it!
